Something not working?

Most of it is one of these eight things. If it is not, email a human — it is a small project, so the human is us.

Do my steps count when the app is closed?

Yes. While the app is open the live sensor counts every step (screen off is fine). And when you reopen it after closing, Go Touch Grass reads back what your phone recorded while you were away and credits it, up to a two-day catch-up. On Android that comes from Health Connect; on iOS from the phone’s own motion step history — no GPS either way. Cycling and driving still produce no steps, by design.

The app is not counting anything.

Three usual causes. Your device may have no hardware step sensor, in which case the game cannot track walks at all — there is no GPS fallback by design. You may not have granted the physical activity permission; that is asked during onboarding and can be re-granted in system settings. Or you may be moving without stepping: cycling and driving produce no steps, which is intentional.

My uncollected kilometres are disappearing.

That is decay, and it is deliberate. After two hours of standing still, uncollected distance melts at 20% per hour, so the game rewards claiming daily rather than hoarding for a month. The Snack Pack skill in the Forager branch extends the grace period by up to four hours.

Why does the app never ask for my location?

Because it does not need it and we do not want it. Steps are enough to know you walked, and every location permission we do not request is a category of data that cannot leak, cannot be subpoenaed, and cannot be sold. The location code was removed from the project entirely.

Do I need an account or an internet connection?

No. The whole game runs locally. An anonymous account only exists to power the optional social layer — the weekly league, following other players, and visiting bases. If you are offline, you keep playing and your kilometres are submitted when you reconnect.

How do I delete my account and my data?

In the app: Settings → Account → Delete my account. That immediately erases your name, player code, base layout, distance, league history and friendships from the server, and wipes the local save. There is no backup and no recovery. If you cannot reach that screen, email us with your player code (#ABC1234) and we will do it for you.

Can I buy my way up the league?

No. The league is scored on kilometres you actually walked and collected, and Skill Points are not purchasable by design. If the game ever sells anything it will be cosmetic.

Can I play competitively without walking first?

Yes — Wave Composer. Build your own wave from the Couch Army roster and attempt to clear it with your current base, any time, no cooldown, unlimited retries. It never gives loot or XP (walking is still the only real income), but a full clear scores points on a ranked leaderboard, all-time and this month.

What stops people from faking their steps?

Kilometres are submitted as server-clamped deltas with a daily cap, never as a total, and the step cadence has to be physically plausible. Accounts caught injecting distance get reset or removed — the entire game rests on the walking being real.
